BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE FROM 15/08/2006

Hi

Can someone advises me i have UC ticket from Lhr-Del in Sept with allt he changes in baggage i was wondering what the effect will be on the checked in baggage have they increased the weight allowance instead of 30kg will it be 46kg and u dont carry any hand luggage ?

Noone has told us whats going on with weights and whethe rit would be better to take an extra suitcase instead of hand luggage

VS are currently removing the excess luggage charge. However this only aplies to additional hold luggage up to what would have been your hand luggage allowance. Thus, if you had 30kg hold allowance and, say, 16kg hand allowance you would now be allowed, as you rightly said, 46kg. So at the moment you would be best to take and extra suitcase plus a small hand luggage bag. See here

However the situation is changing daily. In particular I could not now find a reference to waived excess charges on VS.com, so things may already have changed. It is important that you check with VS closer to your flight.

Just been to Heathrow to drop some friends off at T3 thoguth i would ask about baggage allowance with one of the Virign guys and they said that as upperclass ticket i would be allowed to take 30kg checked in lugggage and only the laptop size handluggage.

So whats happened to the 16kg i was allowed to take as handluggage previously when i bought me ticket. If this is the case then i am very upset as i have paid extra for the this extra weight and i think they should put that weight in the checked in baggage allowance.
Plus i am not sure what i can do on my return journey from Del to LHR do the same rules apply

I am very confused can anyone help

The goalposts with regards to baggage,have been not only moved, they have been obliterated.

I am afraid that, at least in the short term, we are stuck with the rules and regulations imposed by 'the powers that be'. These are changing regularly, so keep your eye on the VS or BAA websites to see what the situation is just before you fly.

Returning from DEL to LHR, the rules do not apply. You are allowed your regular cabin baggage allowance (in weight/size terms) inbound.

Hence why my opinion is the whole thing's a load of ****.

No! You are wrong.

It is a reflection of the inablity of UK airport operators, and BAA in particular to effectively and efficiently check hand luggage. A view that is bought into start contrast when one compares the policy being implemented by our fav peops, the TSA. In the US, you can take your full hand luggage, and you can buy duty free whish is efficiently delivered to you when you board - Two goals in one, security over duty free liquids is maintained, and you don't have to carry it round the airport.

To be fair PVGSLF, VS have waived the excess baggage by giving an extra checked allowance equivelent to the reduction in the hand luggage.

I know they initially waived the excess baggage charges. But I see no mention now on their website about anything over and above the 23 or 30kgs normally allowed to Asia. But they do clearly state the new maximum size of handluggage
Which to me means that if one can't squeeze what one normally squeezes into the Hand luggage allowable size, then it can't be added on to the checked baggage without risk of being charged excess for it.

Of course I know check-in staff have a little leeway on checked baggage weights, and I've never had to pay excess for just being a few kgs over.
But being in an argumentative mood at the moment I'd probably demand to see the calibration certiciate for the scales before parting with any cash!

But my previous point still stands.

Now you say, the announcement about additional allowance was made when hand luggage was effectively banned. I could not find anything on the web site either, so rang prem team. It appears you get an extra 50% of the hand luggage allowed weight, but it does seem a pretty well kept secret.

I must say that IMHO BAA are the villains here, and I see nothing to indicate VS are trying to profit from the situation.

And we know if it is secret from us, there's a good chance it is secret from the check in staff too!

Come on virgin. Put it in black and white as to what the situation is.

I'm flying J back to the uk at the end of september, and don't actually plan to be carrying much more than my small Dell laptop bag.. (now useless... see another of my gripes of the day on another thread!), but I will sadly be relegated back to Y on the way back out to Seoul (Given a cash lump sum to arrange travel when I'm on assignment, which whilst not enough to afford J, is double what i can generally get a Y ticket for, so can pocket the rest to cover MrsPVG's next flights), and will be wanting bring my winter clothes and skiing gear with me, so will need to squeeze as much handluggage as I can!!!

Just wanted to add that the weight allowance is alot to do with Health and Safety regs for Baggage handling staff.
