V-Flyer

Hey all...

I am going to be on my first UC flight this December and really looking forward to it

Yesterday I was informed of a change in flight times, and when I logged into VA to check the booking, I noticed they changed the plane to a 747.

My question therefore is, now that I have the option of the Upper Deck, vs the Lower Deck, which one is better?

My main requirements from the flight is to make the most of UC, since this is my first flight (and I'd like to compare it to BA First which I'm flying to Singapore on in March).

I imagine Upper Deck is more quiet, but surely Lower Deck is more entertaining with more UC passengers and the various facilities.

Any help greatly appreciated. Oh yes, at the moment I'm booked into 9A. If anyone has any better suggestions, let me know.

9A is a great seat, the UD is, as you have said, more quiet, even on west bound flights. From your suite you will be able to see some activity, pax coming and going to/from the IFBT position but the A zone is a bit quierter than the B zone behind it.


Here is a pic of my good lady "Birkin" esconsed in seat 10A - 9A being the (then) empty one on the right of the pic (yeah I know, obviously).

If you want to make the most of Upper - i'd say downstairs!

You'll be close to the bar, IFBT and get more of a feel of the product. I find the upstairs Upper cabin on a LHR 744 to be a bit 'removed' from the Upper experience. Its generally used as a sleeper section on some flights ex-US as Barry mentioned, but having the PE cabin directly behind it without a curtain doesnt often do the trick. The seats are slightly different dimensions on Upper and Lower deck too.

The winner here would probably be downstairs out and upstairs home so you get a feel for both

Dont compare too hard to BA F, as UCS is a J product after all

Can't seem to do a search on 9A in the Photo Gallery but having a further look through the "Cabins" section this one shows part of the A zone with rows 6,7 and 8 counting from the front, your's would be the next one and the screen left foreground id the divider between suites 9 and 8.

It gives a feel for the size of the nose cabin sadly though the red cushions have since departed (although we know where a few are )

If you have the time browse through the Gallery, I am sure there are many more there to whet your appetite [y]

If it's your first UC experience, I'd say go for the main deck - although the upper deck might suit you better if you prefer a bit of quiet.

Another vote for the lower deck.

Lower deck for me too. I nearly cried when I found myself on the Upper Deck for a day flight. It was too much like being in PE, plus you got off after the PE passengers [:(]

OK, as Bazz will attest I was in 9K last year to LAX and really liked it in the nose. Lots of space and an airy feel about it. I had 4K booked for November just to see what it is like, but this thread has made me change my mind and I'm back in 9K again. I used to be indecisive but now.......

Another vote for the lower deck. It's where the action is!

Well you've all sold me now. Just changed from 2K outbound to LAX to 9K. Inbound is still 2K so I can sleep.

Just flew out to LAX in 8K. I much prefer the lower deck for day flights. The upper deck for return back to the UK is great for a good sleep. Even if you get off after some PE pax, if you are a UK passport holder or use IRIS there will be minimal delay through immigration.

For me 10 and 11K were getting a little too close to the IFBT area. Also, 6 and 7 do not have overhead luggage space.

My inbound is on an A340, so being 2K might be a bit close to the toilet for those that want sleep depending on which aircraft setup you get.
