Departing US security checks

Departed LAX this week and there was just the normal x-ray check and no other. Many passengers had their previously normal size roller bags as carry on luggage.

I had put my hand cream in my suitcase as I assumed it would not get through but it would have.

Are the checks in place at other US airports or is it just departing the UK? Or are those checks now at a lower level as well?

IME the checks recently, especially for liquids, in US airports are full and thorough.

Liquids are still a no-no in the US. The overall check, however, may not be as great as it is in the UK.

My experience of UK checks were pretty dire. If you are going to announce new security measures, at least follow it through. Yes, there are a lot of extra security people at the airport, but i cant see that the checks are any more efficient than they were previously.

Thanks,

Came home from SFO on VS20 on Monday. Standard size carry-ons permitted but security was tighter than usual. A lot of cases being hand searched after X-ray. Including my wife's and one of my son's (asthma inhalers detected in both cases). All passengers hand frisked at X-ray and again at boarding gate. Random passengers being picked out at gate for hand search of carry on as well.

On return to London from LAX on Monday everybody had their hand luggage hand searched by a team of officers just before boarding.

At ABQ they had a display board showing all the things you could not have in your hand luggage - toothpastem, shaving foam, etc. Only thing was that someone had obviously been to the supermarket and bought an example of each item, then they had been stuck to the board with sticky tape. It looked like someone's kid had made it at school, but I have to say I really liked the informality it implied, and it certainly caught your eye and made you look. So much more interesting that a poster with a written list of banned items!

Flew out of BOS last week (on BA, but same terminal that VS uses) and checks were more or less the same. Though it was now *manditory* to take your shoes off.
