Hand luggage restrictions to be eased next week?

Not exactly a Virgin story, but very pertinent to most of us.

According to news reports including Sky News and The BBC, the rules about what can be taken onto an aircraft, may be relaxed next week. [y][y]

Passengers will be allowed to take bigger hand luggage and some liquids. The exact detail are yet to be ironed out.

Good news! Being a cynic, assuming the revised rules come into effect, I wonder how long it will take BAA to implement - all that staff training after all!

And I hope BAA manage some consistency too - last week at LHR it was laptops out and boarding pass in hand through the scanner, today at LGW it was neither ...

Hurrah for the news ... but back to normal, I guess BAA's interpretation is what we'll look for.

Good news - just listning about it on the news, still seems a bit unsure of when/what/how etc, hopefully it will be done with a clear procedure so that everybody, staff and pax know what is happening.

Thanks for that, Nick. Will be interesting to see how this plays out in the USA. Here the government is saying that the ban may need to stay in place awhile yet while it is learned exactly how to scan for explosive components in liquids.

Fly out of Gatwick tomorrow, so a bit late for me - wonder what this will mean for the return flight though??? It's good news anyway, though I'm surprised it hasn't taken longer.

I thought the restrictions on baggage size was for ex UK flights only anyway?

Yup - Coming INTO the UK won't make an ounce of difference. Apart from the liquid rule (which I can't yet see being relaxed), flights coming into a UK airport never had their hand baggage size restricted in the first place.

That's what makes the whole thing nothing short of utter stupidity. [ii]

That is correct. Many other countries, notably the US, have the liquids restrictions (etc) though. I would assume that the latter restrictions are unlikely to change as a result of a change in UK policy.

Good point - maybe I'll pack the bag I usually use in the cabin - it'll make life so much easier if I want to bring breakables home.

Good to see some reality seeping in at last with the lifting of restrictions. However, the account I read in the papers this morning was saying that the size of carry-on would be increased from the current "small briefcase only" to a large size but not as large as the international cabin carry-on standard which everybody has. So, flying to FSFO next month, I'll most likely still have to check my carry-on. The only alternative is to invest in yet another one which is larger than a briefcase but smaller than my standard one. Then in
another month when the lift the size restriction completely, I'll never use it again.

100% agree - here I am in the BA lounge at Schipol with all my bags, all my toiletries and all!

10 hours with out moisuriser, how awful! You sooo need to come on my next trip to Portugal - a few days in Biscay, shaving with salt water , baby wipe showers, 4 hour sleep pattern. It'll show your skin who's boss.

Just watching the news over here and the EU have agreed new regulations around hand luggage. The broad issues are:

Liquids will be allowed but restricted to 100mls with the exception of baby foods and medicines

There will be a legal limit to the size of hand luggage with the exception of music instruments

There will be a legal requirement to remove jackets and coats and laptops

These are the ones I remember. It was stated it was expected these measures will be in place by November
