I believe there were engine problems and its on its way back to London as we speak flying with 3 engines and no customers.

Careful - I can see the headlines the press will have tomorrow:
"Terror as jet flies 5,500 miles in ball of flames as engine fails - only 4 crew land safely" [:0];)

Well atleast they took the customers off. Sounds like they made a good choice.

If it was on the ground when the fault was found, they had no choice!!!

Probably an obvious question that has an even more obvious answer, but what do VS do with all those stranded pax under these circumstances? And what are the knock-on effects on the following day's flight?

I would really like to know this as well. Did they get another plane or were they made to wait until the next day? Also can they downgrade your ticket from UC?

Problem was discovered on the ground. All PAX were sent on other carriers or on VS via LAX. An engine change is required therefore a (specially trained) 3-Engine Ferry crew were sent to SFO to bring the plane back via New York.

They can do that but it happens very infrequently. Try a search on "Downgrade" on the forum search facility!

Saw the plane at SFO at 1 am on Sep 29 still sadly standing on the tarmac.

Could this be the reason VP9 is cancelled today:
Flight number VS 009
Departure date 30 Sep 2006
Route London (LHR) to New York (JFK)
Scheduled departure time 30 Sep 16:00
Scheduled arrival time 30 Sep 18:55
Flight status CANCELLED
Or is that for another reason?

Isn't the VS009 normally an A340?[:?]

Good point, I think it is! So not sure what has happened there then!
VS10 has obviously been cancelled too. So will they ship those people over to EWR or put them on VS26 tomorrow morning (which I'm on!)
