V-Flyer

Well, since the latest security change last Friday, I've taken four flights from UK airports.

At LHR last Friday and yesterday removal of shoes was mandatory, both times at the T1 International Zone R BA premium security point.

At LCY, also yesterday, I (and other pax) already had shoes removed, but we were told we didn't need to after the event. At MAN this morning there was also no requirement to remove shoes.

I see that there is no requirement to remove shoes on the DFT site.

This is what makes a mockery of the regulations. I am happy to oblige by them providing there is consistency, whats the point in some pax doing it and others not, and it just causes confusion and anger in the pax.

Inconsistency is really annoying (VS take note;)) - maybe it's because LHR is at a higher security level or something? Although that does leave other options open for terrorists etc.[:?]

Just a little FYI: DON'T do the LOB one-shoe in the US, or you'll be singled out by the *wonderful, kind, helpfully friendly* (read - NOT) TSA folks for a full secondary patdown! They have no sense of humor, and will decide to make your life a living example in front of all the other waiting pax for your attempt at humor! For they, unfortunately, have none.

Oh, another warning: take the shoes off in the US! Even if TSA goes back to saying it's voluntary, if you DON'T take them off you are 'automatically' selected for their tender ministrations of Secondary. Even if they deny it, that's the official line. Has been for years.

Welcome to America, the land of lots of written and unwritten rules and regs... and I'm not sure all the TSA people can read! (Or hear. Or lip-read. One airport to another, they each have a different interpretation of what's allowed and what isn't.) [n]

As far as I'm aware, the "official" public policy has always been that the shoe carnival is "voluntary" (even during these "heightened" times) - of course, it's down to the TSA folks in each individual airport as to whether they want to implement that or not [ii][ii]

The requirements change often but I think the lastest is that 1 in 3 PAX remove their shoes. According to one security guard the BAA at Heathrow were finding there was more arguments from PAX about 'why can they go through with their shoes on and not me' so they decided to just make everyone do it.

I posted similarly recently - at LHR it's laptops out of bags but not the case of LGW ...

What bothers me is the horrifying state of the carpet at LHR T3 where I think we could almost have a David Attenborough level discussion of the microbes and infestation from the multitude of feet passing over. no sign of a disposable mat thrown once a week.. YUK

Well I guess that does make sense: I would have thought at the rate of one in three, you would get a faster throughput if everyone took them off rather than wait until they get to the machine, then have to spend a couple of minutes removing shoes with a line of pax behind.

Still, consistency would be nice - To be honest, the term 'laughing stock' comes to mind right now as a description of the state of the security in the UK over the past couple of months, elevated from a level of 'ridiculously inconsistent' prior to this.

The GF flew thru LHR on Thursday and voluntarily gave up her lip glosses (we'd had a big night the night before and were woken by the limo driver at 6am so it was a rapid wake up and exit - don't you hate it when that happens). When she returned home she realised that there had still been tubs of Savlon and Vaseline in her carry on. Please, no questions as to why she would have such items...
