Miles to upgrade

Can I use Continental Miles to upgrade on VS metal flights at check-in? Or do I have to call early and try that approach?

Nope, sorry.

You can only use VS miles to upgrade at check-in.

Assuming you're on a CO reward/award flight, flying VS metal, you could speak to CO well beforehand to try and upgrade it. If it's a revenue (paid) ticket, then no.
