Hi Gabby & welcome to V-flyer!:D
Have you looked under the "Trip Reports" for Virgin Atlantic? i think on the 2nd page there is a posting from someone who recently flew to Sydney.
What class are you flying?

Hi Gabby welcome to V-Flyer.
Check out the trip reports, they will fill you in a little more as to what to expect
From my own travels I will say this, the VS Y product is on par with most other airlines, it is nothing amazing, the legroom can be a little tight, the food is airline food and the IFE at least from LHR is top rate.
A couple of things you need to know, most trip reports done on other sites will be negative of most airlines due to the fact that people like to complain more than they like to praise, human nature at it's worst.
At least here you will get a slightly unbiased opinion, not due to the fact that this site is VS related but due to the fact that there are a number of members here who spend a great deal of their life at 38k feet and know how a flight should be.
So please take a look around.
Which class are you flying in ?

Y/PE there hasn't been a downturn in food IMO and I've never noticed any problems with the WCs in any class. Overall, Y is definitely on a par with most majors, particularly when compared with the US and the continent. UC is generally superior to most airlines, although service can sometimes be a bit lacking and other aspects of the product need some attention. HOwever, you get two sets of crew to SYD anyway so at least one leg each way should be good I'd say.
VS.

Well part of that is the expectation that the VS media circus likes to build around their Y product, when in fact it is pretty ordinary.
I hope you and your mother have good flights.

I flew to HK (so same flight)at the end of last year and was also quite worried about the service as I hadn't flown with them for a while. It was better than I thought, V Port is good. The main issue is leg room and I think its better on the airbus than the 747. If you get the new economy seats that will also help. Have a good time!
