About 10 days ago, it seems that the Indian Goverment introduced stricter rules on what you can take on board in carry on luggage.

http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/passengerinformation/baggage/handbaggageain.jsp
says:

No liquids, foods or cosmetics of any type are permitted other than the following items:

* Prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket and supported by an authorised person
* Baby formula, breast milk, and baby food in small containers if a baby or small child is travelling

No liquids includes gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurised containers, e.g. toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, deodorant, shaving foam, aerosols, etc.

Liquid Duty Free items can be purchased from stores after the security checkpoints these will be delivered to passengers at the boarding gate upon their final departure by the Duty Free agent.

Note that the rules are even different for Delhi and Mumbai!

From what I can see, there are similar restrictions on internal flights. Apparently its because of worries about homegrown Indian terrorists

Yes you're right - and they're pretty strict too. They've also introduced the one hand baggage rule as well and are pretty strict on that too. Although, it being India, sometimes rules are meant to be broken!
