Did a search for this but couldn't find it.

I've had to book a reward flight with PE outbound due to the lack of availability in Upper.

If a seat in Upper becomes available is it possible to pay the extra miles and change the U seat to a G? I know if this is a companion award it's impossible but what if it is a straight milage redemption?

Yes. About a week before, maybe less, availability may open up. Or you may get lucky at the airport.

I don't beleive the change fee applies in this instance.

No change fee applies in the case of upgrading an award ticket.
