We are planning a trip next year to SYD flying UC and flying home with Singapore Airlines from SIN in Business. Will we be able to book a seat using Miles Plus Money- even if just for the SYD leg?

Miles plus money fares are always based upon a round trip journey, operated by a Virgin Atlantic aircraft. So the answer to your question is a no...

Surely it's *technically* possible to do, Juliet - but you'd have to purchase a return trip (either only using the one sector or booking a return for a time in the future when it may be used)?

I'd say it's possible, but may be expensive if you only intend to use one leg of the journey.

while we are on this subject.

Is it possible to upgrade from Y to W using miles if you have already booked your flight through VH.

there are miles plus money seat available for the dates i'm travelling

Nope.

VH flights are non-upgradeable with miles, largerjt. Cash on the day, or a "prepaid" upgrade with VH themselves are the only ways.
