Fare codes for upgrades to PE

Dear Gurus

I have read through the fare codes but am still a little confused. [?]
Can someone help with my query on fare codes please.

If I book a Y ticket, what fare class needs to be available in PE to upgrade using miles ?
If I want to get a corresponding Companion ticket in EC (using the Amex CC voucher) what fare class does that use ?
Is the companion ticket upgradeable in any way ? I have plenty of miles.
Would the Amex CC Premium upgrade voucher be of any use in this scenario ?

This is all for a trip to LAS (7th to 12th May ish..), so availability is not great but want to call FC armed with the facts if poss.

To get a reward seat in Premium (companion or upgrade), you need availability in U class.

To get a reward seat in Economy(companion), you need availability in T class.

Companion ticket is not upgradeable (exception is via the Virgin CC voucher, which moves it from an Economy companion in T class to a U class).

Thanks, that's what I was hoping.[^] There is T & U on the outgoing, but only T incoming at the moment so will book what I can and then keep checking.

Hi all,

Richard's comment has piqued my interest, since I have a Virgin CC companion ticket to use up soon. So, here's my question:

I buy a W/S class PE ticket, and get a companion "U" fare ticket.

Could I, on the day of travel, subject to availability, upgrade both these tickets to UC using miles?

Nope - only the W/S, Randalf. It's in the rules.


(Whether there's any compromise provided on the DAY, I don't know...)
