V-Flyer

With a view to our upcoming trip to BGI I've just been browsing the 'Menu Choices' sticky, and there doesn't seem to be any mention of food offerings on any LGW/MAN flights.

Whilst I'm curious to find out what will be offered on our flight, it struck me as all the more interesting to pose the query - how many different menus run at any one time? I guess inbound flights will differ more widely, but for outbound does it run true that there are LGW menus, US menus, NRT menus, Indian menus etc.? And, if through the wonders of modern technology, I get to find out what I'll be having for lunch next Sunday, all the better...

I think the BGI has the current "Best of British" menu. I hope you like potatoes:

* Potato soup or salmon with potato salad to start.
* Vegetable cottage pie, bangers and mash, chicken tikka masala.

* Afternoon Tea

Can't remember if this has the smaller bites or not, if they are, I think it's:

* Pork pie
* Cheese toastie with pickle/chutney of some sort
* Something else I've forgotten. Probably involving potato.

Remember to check for stealth potatoes in the ice cream.[}:)]

Thanks Mike. I tried cabbage ice cream in Amsterdam once (all legal and above board I can assure you), so maybe potato ice cream could work. Then again, maybe not...

This 'ere Best of British menu seems to have been kicking around for an awfully long time - think I've had it twice already, and we only fly two or three times a year. Ah well, chicken tikka it is then. Not as exciting as some of the other menus, is it?

Actually, I think it's come and gone at least once, and come back again (with the odd tweak). It's essentially the same as the menu which was served last summer around June time - certainly in terms of the main dishes, except I don't even think you get naan bread with the chicken tikka masala anymore - if the recent trip reports are anything to go by.

The food has become so dull and poorly chosen, but as everyone knows, that's my main whinge about VS Upper Class at the moment, and everyone's probably sick to the back teeth of my kvetching by now. (Any vikings around here? "You can have Spam, Spam, Potato and Spam...")

Where did you have the cabbage ice cream? Unlimited Delicious on the Haarlemmerstraat? Seems like the sort of thing they would do.

In the restaurant at the Radisson, believe it or not. Apparently they used to have a competition with the Grand Hotel next door - make a number of ice creams out of 'whacky' ingredients then get the oppostion to guess what they were. Those crazy Amsterdammers, are they on something or what...?

More importantly - NO NAAN?!? Good grief, I stood by with barely a comment when the flowers on the bar went, I made hardly a muff when the red pillows disappeared - but when the stingey b*ggers serve a curry without a naan bread, what is it all coming to?? Nothing on there for Mrs. mdvipond (yet again) so that will go down like the proverbial lead balloon...

Ah, excellent, a bit of friendly rivalry. Can only drive innovation and make an interesting time for one's tastebuds!

A business contact took me to eat at Cafe Roux at the Grand a couple of years ago. Most impressive.

Nothing on there for Mrs. mdvipond (yet again) so that will go down like the proverbial lead balloon...

Yes, it's pretty limiting for me too.

Seeing as you're not praying for an op-up or anything similar, how about ordering a special meal?

What sort of thing would they have on offer? I'm not sure that Mrs. mdvipond would be overthrilled with halal, for instance...

Check the year! That's from last year - but the menu is surprisingly identical (except lacking in even more fresh food - the fresh "herb salad" replaced with stodgy, but probably cheaper, potato salad), so you can be forgiven.

That said, unless there's some sort of catering problem (like the one which made sausage and radioactive mash version 1 stick around for about 8 months), this BofB menu is due for changing some time in June.

Great. So now not only am I missing out on naan bread, I'm missing out on very good naan bread. And the menu is due to change 2 weeks after my flight. Curse my luck.

Not good that they seem to be reguritating tired old menus (if you'll excuse the unfortunate pun). And most of it appears to be stodge as well, which is hardly the best possible 'flying fare'. Is this a case of the B&S routes getting stuck with the left-overs...?

But check out the clubhouse..it's amazing...ok so we are going to jump back on the food bashing thing again..well quite rightly so as the last few menu's have sucked, to the point of asking for food from the PE menu [:#]

Nope. LHR-US is the same menu.

The increasing stodginess of VS meals seems to be a theme which I've noticed on other boards (along with waves of other dissatisfaction that have also been on here - dirty planes, stinky lavs, broken seats, etc), not just V-Flyer...

Just to agree with Mike..the LHR Christmas menu was pretty much inedible, well at least for me.

In August 2001 I had my first experience of UC thanks to an on-board op-up. I remember having the recommended dish from the menu which was.....

...bangers and mash! It's been around for a long time

My last experience of BofB was roasted lamb shank, with mash. This was before the re-introduction of metal cutlery.

Now, I get into enough mess with a simple BBQ spare rib in a proper resturant so imagine how the lamb on bone went down! Yep, down the aisle to Y at a rate of knots. I can still hear those bones being gnawed on even today.

That's awful. Throwing your tit-bits down the back for the Y pax to devour It's positively medieval...

Great to watch though, seeing who is the Alpha Male in the cabin
