Flight Numbers

This may have been covered before but I can't find it. So I will ask anyway.

How do airlines choose flight numbers? Also can anyone remember what the LGW-SFO flight number was?

LGW-SFO-LGW used to be the VS41/42 which operated from 2000 for a couple of years iirc.

Edit to say, just found this thread from a while ago that has a post from AtlanticFlyer who explains a bit about flight number allocating and some of the reasons behind it (half way down on page 2)
