Flight Deck photos?

A general query about flight-deck photos, now that visits to the FD are no longer allowed whilst airbourne, for obvious reasons.

If I was to offer the FSM on my next trip my digital camera and ask them to pass it to the flight deck at some stage during the flight for a few pics to be taken, are they likely to be able to assist? I’ll be downstairs on a LGW/MAN 744 in UC, so would have no idea when they took the camera “up front” – as long as I got it back before arrival, I would not care when it was taken to the flight deck.

Obviously, I don’t want to discuss anything security related on here – but I am 99.9% certain that some in-flight movement between the cabin and the flight deck takes place. (To allow for food to be delivered, toilet visits, crew rest on a very long-haul flight etc).

Does anyone know if this is possible on VS – or have they tried it and failed / succeeded? The camera would obviously be in hand baggage and have been security screened.

On various flights to and from the UK and also in the US Aer John has requested and received permission to visit the flight deck when the flight is over. He has several photos of himself sitting in the captain's seat in various aircraft. The only airline that has consistently refused has been VS. The sad part is that before 9/11, the cabin crew on other long-haul flights (BA and SAA) regularly rounded up all the youngsters on board and herded them up to the cockpit for a viewing.

Aer John's finest hour was when we flew a now defunct airline, Jetmagic between Cork and Milan in 2003. He was invited into the cockpit on the outbound and on the return, following the invitation he was invited to sit in the jump seat for the landing. [y]

The story I liked best was when we flew HNL-SFO on Delta and on landing in SFO he got in to the cockpit. The First Officer was Irish and asked in Irish "How are you?" Aer John responded in Irish and yer man fell off the seat in surprise!

On our flight to NRT, Floyd, Gershwin and Poochie went up to the flight deck and had their photos taken. For those new to V-Flyer, the aforementioned are the 'soft toy' substitute children of some of the Tokyo Bitches We asked if they could pay a visit to the flight deck for a photo stop, seeing as us humans were not able to, and the FSM had a word with the captain and agreed it. I think FozzyO has the pictures, most of the instrumentation was obscured from the picture in our case but we were happy.

I guess its a case of "ask with the expectation of a no, and if you get a yes, be very happy".

It's a great, great pity that events surrounding 9/11 brought the end to flight deck visits. I consider myself to be one of the last lucky few non staff/family members to have this experience on VS (or anywhere) when I came home from JNB in Dec 2002 at the sharp end. IUt all ended very shortly after that.

The Crew did take the photo, but as I recall the pilots wern't that keen on the whole flight deck being shown in the photo. From what you saw Gershwin could have been sitting next to any hardware.

Now on the "dashboard" would have been cool!
