Economy upgrade to premium

I am going to HK soon and I want to go at least premium economy. Virgin always seems expensive in PE to HK compared to BA and Air NZ. However, I need 2 tier points to reach flying club silver by the end of October, which I'd like to do. How easy is it to book economy and then use miles to upgrade. Can I still get the tier points for the economy flights, do I need to do it seperatly and do I need a specific economy ticket as usually I just book the cheapest I can find. I know each class has different letters of tickets, but I don't understand what they mean.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Also BA usually run a 'World Offers' sale from Sept 1st (certainly for the last several years) - do Virgin usually do likewise or does it just depend on whether they need extra sales.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you

Hi
Upgrades both paid and miles are explained in the
FAQ's.
If you start at the above link then it should become clearer. If you are still confused with the fare codes, they are explained
here.Virgin sales are pretty frequent, but nothing is set in stone, we will have to wait and see.

You could always fly Air New Zealand and get points and miles as a Virgin Partner....

Also remember that PE and Upper reward flights on the HKG route are like gold dust. They are very popular and sell very quickly.

Air NZ Premium Economy looks like a very good deal to me.
Remember that on Air NZ, Premium Economy gets very similar meal choices to the Business Class cabin, the same drinks selection as Business Class, and is (mostly) upstairs on the 747-400 (though there's now a few seats downstairs like on the VS LHR 744 fleet, either side of No.2 galley).
You'll also earn the tier points that you're looking for.

Why are one-way K fares routinely available without advance purchase on the SYD-LHR and HKG-LHR routes but not the other way round? If you want to go ex-LHR one way then only W fares are available.

Albeit that upstairs they are five across rather the great and soon to be lamented 4 in pairs on VS.

Thank you.
I did fly Air NZ a few months ago, but I didn't like the day flight back from a jet lag point of view. Also having flown Virgin PE to the US a few times in recently I do prefer the Virgin seat although Air NZ service is very good.
