I seem to remember a thread last year discussing the Amex upgrade/companion vouchers.
There was some debate around the fact you could use miles to buy an economy seat, then upgrade with the PE upgrade voucher, and then use the companion voucher to get a second PE ticket (could be wishful thinking on my part). Having searched in both cards and flying club I have begun to doubt my memory can someone please post a link (if it does exist) to the thread.

Whenever I have used a Companion ticket, it will only match the revenue fare ticket I purchased and is then not upgradeable with miles.

I have recently booked a trip using an Amex Companion reward, and found the only way to get a PE Companion ticket was to buy a PE ticket for me.

I don't ever recall a companion ticket would match a mileage ticket. I know BA have done this for years, and is a really nice option.

If Virgin did, then I would have mileage UC ticket and match it every time.

In case any one was interested I have pieced together the answer to my own question.
You can't use the companion voucher in that way however after e-mailing the Flying Club I understand that bookings made with a companion flight are in T class so therefore you can upgrade them using you PE upgrade voucher. This is confirmed by this section in the fare codes section of V-Flyer
If you have reached the threshold via spend on your Virgin Credit Card for the upgrade award, you can use the upgrade award to upgrade this type of ticket one way up to Premium Economy.

SO I think this is the best use of the vouchers.

Buy and Economy L class ticket use the companion reward voucher, then upgrade the reward with the PE voucher and the full fare ticket with 20,000 miles you now have 2 PE tickets[|:)]

I hope this is correct

I had previously thought that although you can upgrade the main ticket with the PE voucher, the actual companion ticket was not able to be upgraded, even with miles. Hope you are right though as it would be handy to be able to do this. Anybody know for sure??

the AMEX upgrade voucher can ONLY upgrade a T class into a U class.

I was told that a companion ticket can not be upgraded, it is effectively locked into the type of ticket you purchased. I have been told this on a number of times by different agents, when booking various trips.

That is true, except in conjunction with the AmEx Upgrade voucher which can only be used with redemption bookings.

Thanks,
Richard

I've just tried to book using my vouchers and the FC say they can't be used in conjunction with each other. Can anyone tell me if this is true? has anyone used the companion and PE rewards together?

As Juliet, Richard and others have said. the AmEx upgrade vouchers from the VS AmEx can only be used to upgrade Economy reward bookings, not a revenue fare and an economy reward booking from using a companion voucher as you are trying to do.

Thanks,
Sarah
