Mauritius email - Miles Plus Money... why?

Just had the email through proclaiming the new Mauritius route, and I'm still scratching my head at why anyone would use Miles Plus Money on this route:

Economy from £635 50,000 miles £541 + 2,000 miles

Premium Economy from £1,075 75,000 miles £981 + 7,500 miles

Upper Class from £1,475 100,000 miles £1,450 + 15,000 miles

So you can save £94 on Economy / Premium Economy, and £25 on Upper Class, by doing MpM.

Taking into account the fact that MpM fares don't accrue miles, the total cost in terms of miles for those savings are 14,148 (Economy not N class), 18,222 for Premium Economy, or 39,296 for Upper.

So, save £25 on your Upper Class flight, but it'll cost you 39,296 miles? Am I missing something here? [?]

I'm sure that there's a few routes that MpM can make sense, but I fail to see how VS expect anyone to take up this kind of 'offer'.

Thanks,

David.

It is very rare for any route to be worth the MpM ticket, it is just a good way for VS to bring back in house a few miles and not have to give any out.

[ref UC tickets]

Also, MpM are still available to buy within 42 days of travel...when the Z's can no longer be bought. Only at this stage do they make sense...

Edit: For reference, a D class return can be as much as £3019, making the MpM seem good value.

I used MpM on my last minute flight SFO-LHR in UC, the D was $10,500 each, whereas MpM was $4100 each plus 15k miles. Even with the loss of miles and tier points it made a lot of sense to me.

It was odd however to advertise MpM from the outset, I hope this means the Z's are selling well!

think you might be right - in november, it is looking fairly much like 'D' class only....

remember that MPM in Upper CAN be changed, whereas changing the Z class ticket means difference in fare to the FULL J fare PLUS £100! so the MPM is a lot more flexible if your plans might change.
