According to the Virgin web site:-

http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/fr ... /index.jsp

"CUTTING EDGE SECURITY
Iris Recognition Information System (IRIS) has been introduced at London Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester airports*. At London Gatwick, IRIS replaces Fast Track for departing passengers and it's quick and easy to register. You can register at Gate 90 from 08:00am. For further information go to "

Great. Useful if you are NOT travelling with a child! [V]

EDIT:- Hang on! "Departing" passengers???
I thought that you could only use IRIS to entrer the country??

Why would you think that Fast Track has gone?

The IRIS system needs your IRIS before it can allow you INTO the country, therefore they are asking for people to volunteer to have their Scans done whilst departing. This is done WAY after security down by Gate 90.

IRIS has been extended to departing pax now, although immigration and security are 2 different things. IRIS does not replace security though does it [:?]

Oh I see now. Well the reference to Gate 90 is for registrations only. I don't know if they have this in place yet at the check-point where fast track is/was. If it is in place I can't see that it would hold you up. There was just a guy there manually checking boarding passes and ensuring your pics where captured on security cam before going into the x=ray section.

Seems to me that x-ray is and always was where the bottle neck was.

Could be (hopefully) a stupid question, but if I'm registered for IRIS at LHR will it just "work" at LGW?

I mean, SURELY they've set it up to use the same database, right? [:w]

Indeed Paul, from the IRIS FAQ:

4. Do I have to enrol at each airport terminal to use IRIS?
No. Once you enrol on the IRIS system, you can use the IRIS barriers at any of the participating airport terminals. IRIS is currently in operation at Heathrow terminals 1,2,3 & 4, Gatwick North and South, Manchester terminals 1 and 2 and Birmingham.
