If after a deal, then the ticket desk is probably the best bet. If trying to use miles on an otherwise unupgradable ticket, then the Clubhouse normally have a little more time to try and help (no guarantees, of course).

Adding on to this query, how long before your departure time would the "best time" be to go to the ticket desk if you wanted to check for late reward availability? Is there a set time when they feel unsold seats can be released for miles?

I'm flying to JNB in Dec in W. I'm planning on checking in first thing in the morning to at least snag a bulkhead seat, but would like to try to upgrade to UC if I can. There just weren't any UC reward seats when I booked in Jan.

I'm in similar position flying to Sydney next Friday. The FC Au people said to call 3 days or so before the flight to check if any seats in UC might have been released - not sure if they were trying to convince me to go ahead and make the booking on the promise of a possibility on a W to UC upgrade, or whether there really might be a chance.

I'm also going to try and check in v. early on the Friday morning to try and get a bulkhead seat, and not sure that if I do that I might miss out when I would normally have checked in for the normal "3 hours before".

Who knows....
