If you read my TR's you know I go to Southern Africa on safari a couple of times a year. It's the kind of trip you book, along way ahead, so of course you have the ability to book FF tickets right at the 330 day window. So last October I did just that.
I bought a UC ticket SFO-LHR, used miles for DW, and then we both used UAL miles to get F class on SAA.
Last week I learnt that SAA is phasing out it's 747 fleet and that the flight I was booked on was now J only, so I changed the tickets for a different flight which still shows an F cabin. The UAL ticket agent advised me that as paper tickets were issued I needed to go to a ticket counter to get the change put through. So I drove down to SFO and took care of business.
Today I go onto VS website, thinking I might as well pay the APD, that shyster Brown added as a tax after my purchase was made. I can pull up my booking, but no record exists for DW.
I call VS and the guy says the booking was cancelled because no ticket was issued, the 100k miles were deducted from my account, but no one issued the ticket. Agent is very helpful and puts me on hold and comes back to say they are working with revenue management to get us the seat. I politely suggest that I'd better not hear of any issues with getting the seat when he calls me back, and he understood my point.
I'm a bit of a freak about checking stuff, good job I was, otherwise we would have shown up with an invalid booking reference and itinerary.
