Virgin going green again (new free book)

PostPosted: 22 Sep 2007, 11:27

Full story here
Virgin Atlantic is attempting to ramp up its green credentials by teaming up with environmental charity We Are What We Do to launch a book encouraging consumers to change their behaviour to save the world. It will even ask readers to question whether their flight is necessary.

"Virgin will give away 500,000 copies of the book to passengers next month." - Hopefully, I'll be able to grab one on the 1st [:w]

You would think so, but to produce electricity for your computer you must burn about 50g of wood per hour. A 250 page book uses about 500g of wood. So it depends on whether you read slower or faster than 25 pages an hour!

However if all 500,000 copies were recycled at least once after use, and/or burned to produce electricity it would, I think, make the printed copies the greener option. (many assumptions apply)

All seems kind of ironic really...

They could always get somebody to read it out loud.

"Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin..."

The wait at JFK ought to get through a few chapters [:?]

Daharris - (also lol) - that might work but it depends on what they do with the money saved by not printing the book. It is surprising difficult to spend money without impacting the environment; even giving it away just passes the problem on.

Decker - also factor in the extra copies of the pdf's copied around the world (extra copies to EGG!) and the number of people that will decide to print paper copies to read.

But I'm being a little disingenuous. I suspect Decker is right and the main reason is that most people won't read the pdf's all the way thru if at all, whereas the book gets printed whether its recipient reads it or not. I'm just making the point that many of the assumptions that we make about environmental issues are often wrong or at least less assured than we think when fully thought through.

Ink, glue, binding, electricity ... they should give the option!

Oh no, I fell into that trap!

Are we supposed to read it on the plane and feel a bit naughty.

Or is it just a ploy to make us fall asleep faster and not notice the cruddy grub or empty amenity packs.[:o)]

How would they distribute the PDF if they wish to give away 500,000 to pax, surely it would be on a CD-ROM, with paper parts... [}:)]
