Best option to JNB Aug 08!

I need to fly on exact dates: (LHR - JNB) Thurs 7 Aug 08 outbound - Sun 24th Aug inbound
I am a gold member with a "renew Gold companion ticket" and a VAA amex "Econ to PE upgrade".
travellers = myself, a 14 yr old and an 11yr old
Options
Econ flights are £883.30 on VS website for each of the adults (a couple of hundred £ more than SAA)
Or do i book a full fare Y,B or L fare at around £1314 and get a companion ticket (assuming they are available) = £739.30 each
I would then buy a child return ticket for the 11year old.
I suspect the companion tickets are tough to get (school hols) but i suppose there is no harm in asking.
I would then try to upgrade my Y, B or L fare to PE with the "econ to PE upgrade" - which again, i suspect would not happen!!
What does anyone recommend i should look at?
Is there something that i am missing?
Any advice please.
