East coast USA. Would you go for an early flight?

Hi All. I'm planning a trip latter part of next year and will need a one way flight from NYC to LHR. I really suffer with jet lag. It usually takes me a few days afterwards to recover when I do one of those night flights, even with a bed. What is your experience of taking one of the early morning flights from NYC? Do you find it easier to adjust, even with the early morning wake up call? I like the idea of flying back in the daytime, but am not sure if it is the way to go.

In addition, when I go to the Virgin website the fares are astronomical, being based upon a "J" fare code. Is there an cheaper way of doing the one way flight by ringing Flying Club?

I am sure that this question has been answered before, but I struggled with the search engine and I'm sure keeping the topic current for others will help.

Thanks very much[y]

Phil

One ways are always booked as a full fare segment, so Y, W or J basis. You'd be better off doing a mileage reward to be honest.

I've never done one of the day flights like that home from the East Coast, but I know the Deckers do it regularly and say it's much better.

I always take the early morning flights to the UK (VS018!!!), and have found it much easier to adjust than taking afternoon or evening flights.

Never done the day flight either but you can book slightly cheaper one-way fares in B class and use your miles (10K if you have them) to upgrade to Premium Economy. Is a flat bed worth it on a 6hr daytime flight when you will almost be going to bed on arrival? Probably not.

I did the morning flight from Newark to Heathrow last summer and I had zero jet lag the next day.

We took an early morning flight from BOS-LHR for the first time on Sunday and will do so again,I think the best thing is you are not hanging around all day waiting to go to the airport.

We took the VS26 back in August and it was a very early start. I think the bonus is that an evening arrival at LHR means that by the time you get to your hotel or home it's not long before it's bedtime. I find that I am able to adjust easier to the time difference when taking day flights. Hope this helps.

Day flights inbound to LHR from NYC (018 and 026) are far better for jet-lag and I am a recent convert, having taken my last few flights on the 018.

Thanks for the responses. Since I asked this question I have used most of my miles to upgrade a return flight I am taking to SFO earlier next year. This day flight from the East Coast business has me more and more interested from your comments. I have another conundrum to think about. Now I've used up my miles, day flight in PE on VS or evening flight on Silverjet for about the same price? Strawberry Muppet, you make a good point about the bed and if it is that much easier to adjust, I am favouring a day flight in PE. Something more to think about.

Thanks again for your replies.

Personally I'd go for the Silverjet night flight but if your biggest concern is jet-lag I'd take a day-flight with VS.

I've done a day flight back from Newark a while back and liked the feeling of leaving and arriving the same day. I get affected by jet lag much more flying west so thats not really as issue. And you do have to get up very early and this always seems like a waste when you see what you have to pay in NY hotels nowadays. And then if you live in the arse end of the midlands its another 2 hours up the M40.

But... I take my personal comfort very seriously and if I'm not in UC I might be considering these flights more often from now on. For someone who doesn't sleep too well in seats a flight in PE, or even Y is much more bearable during the daytime.

Cheers!
