Boston flight advice - fare/miles/companion

Looking to book a BOS trip, for 2, and sizing up options before phoning FC.

Would like to sit in PE out, and UC back.

Option 1:
Buy two K fares, and hope for a miles UG at BOS check-in.

Option 2:
Buy one S fare, plus companion fare. And miles UG return segment.
[Can you miles upgrade a companion fare?]

Option 3:
Buy one L fare, plus compansion fare; upgrade out to PE and return to UC with miles.

Choice is harder as I don't yet know the rough pricing of S and L fares to BOS.
Would appreciate any thoughts..

I think a lot would depend on when you want to fly.

Upgrading K fares at the airport with miles isn't too common AFAIK - I have never tried.

From previous posts on here, companion tickets can't be upgraded with miles either.

Again depending on when you want to go, there are some great UC sale fares at the moment (book before 27 Nov). Also, the latest Y sale to the US finished yesterday so, in true London bus style, I am sure there will be another one along soon. ;) The next sale may include PE seats.

Technically, you cant upgrade a companion or K fare with miles. I've managed to do it several times at the airport but of course its by no means guaranteed. Its a case of weighing up the extra cost of buying x2 S fares just so that you can upgrade the return, or booking the cheaper K fares with no guarantees but hoping the G gods are smiling at you in BOS.

The L and S fares ex-tax will be listed on ExpertFlyer if you have a sub or some free queries left.

Thanks,
Sarah

Planning April.

Thanks Nick.. hadn't thought that there might be a PE sale nearer the time.. is that likely?

Recently the sales have been almost constant - the variables are the routes, classes and more importantly - the dates that they are valid for.

The last one was only for flights up to the end of December - the current UC one includes flights in January. Every now and again they will have one where you can book well in advance but, as we all know, past performance doesn't necessarily have any bearing on what will happen in the future. :D

I'd assume that as per usual the Christmas/New Year sale will have fares up to the end of March (my birthday is in March and there are usually always sale fares around that time.) Cant say for sure for April, but it wouldn't hurt to hold out booking till after Christmas if you want a K fare. S fares wont be affected by the sale so if you do want to buy x2 S fares with G avail, i'd start looking now.

Thanks,
Sarah

You could by a K outbound and S inbound? Might save you a bit of money!

I'm looking for a late Feb UC deal to NYC - I guess I should start looking from Boxing day onwards?

That's good to know - I'll need a flight to MCO in May and have been wondering about when any sales are likely to go that far. The trouble is, balancing it against maybe not being able to get a flight.

I suppose there's always BA....[:0]
