DIY checkin or in person check in?

Hi all,
Yes, I am a super newbie and hope this isn't one of those questions that gets asked all the time.

What are the benefits of DIY check in if you're NOT a gold member... just an average run of the mill red card holder with no miles yet on my first Virgin flight? When we booked our tix we were assigned seats, though I am hoping I can get my parents (flying in E) moved up to PE or at least closer to the bulkhead, since my husband and I are travelling in PE with an active toddler. (To help with the baby... not having to shuffle between cabins, etc. When we booked all the tickets all I could get were our tix but now it looks like PE has opened up and her E tickets are non refundable anyway, so I was counting on doing a whole song and dance and hoping that, if they need to bump some people, they'll consider my folks. Worth a shot anyway.)

So, given that, should we just forget online DIY check in and get to the gate super early, or would we be able to benefit at all from DIY?

If we did do DIY check in, would it mean we don't have to show up 2-3 hours in advance?

And, more importantly, if we do DIY check in, can the ticket agent still shuffle us around if we're lucky to get the holy grail of an op-up, or does it mean they'll move on to someone who isn't already checked in.

Thanks,
Kat
I guess

I'd say if your hoping for a possible upgrade you are better to check in inperson.

You will be allocated a seat in economy automatically if you use the DIY check in.

The personal touch is useful in this case!
