Hi, I was wondering what type of earphones given out on the flight?

I know this sounds weird, however the top of my mums ear is bent over and covers some of the whole bit(hope that makes sense) so she can only use the type that go over the head like a head band. On a recent flight with another airline they had the type that go in the ear and they would not stay in without her holding them to her ear the whole time. (on a 10 hour flight) she wants to know if she should bring her own if they are not the head type.

The earphones handed out (and collected at the end of the flight now[:#]) are of the traditional over the head style.

Umm - I *thought* they were outside the ear, but clip ON the ear in Economy & Premium?

(ie: no headband?)

In Upper, they're noise-ish-cancelling-ish over-the-head type ones, but I'm sure I've seen people in Y wearing clip-on style earphones. [?]

They used to be the type you describe Paul, but now - as Buns says, they are the over the head style. They are collected at the end of the flight - or an hour or so before, depending on the crew. [:w]

Having just got back from various VS flights I can confirm they are the classic head-band design. Also be aware that they are the type that fit flat on the ear rather than cupping the ear inside the headphone. Many travellers prefer to use their own headphones as the quality isn't that good.

Does anyone know more about the headphones? I found that when I tried using them in my iPod that the volume was greatly reduced. Are they 'configured' especially to work with the IFE system?

The headphones in W and Y are about to be replaced with better quiality ones which should inprove sound quality!

What are the headphones like in UC ? Do I need to bring my own BOSE noise cancelling ones or not ?

If you have your own Bose QC headphones take them, you will find that they are far better then the UC ones.

There is nothing better than Bose QC's whatever number you have.... at least not that are offered in any aircraft cabin! Always bring them as they will be the best![8D]

edited to add:

the UC ones ARE noise cancelling and are OK, but if you have the QC's try to find space in your carry on for them. [:p]

Just not flown Virgin since last year and cant remember if they were noise cancelling or not [:?] And as I now intend to take quite a few UC fights this year (around 2 return flights a month I guess) with my business and family any and all advise very gratefully flights.

Even in UC, you will find that there is no noise cancelling headphones available on the LGW fleet[V][V]

Ther no info on them other than they being launched at LGW/MAN now and LHR will follow. Ment to be better sound quality im sure some of you will report back!

I have never used the UC headsets of any kind. I have used both QC2 and now 3's and prefer the QC3's. I find after a few hours the cupped QC2's become a bit uncomfortable, others dont so its all down to personal preference. I would never say buy them for the family in lieu of UC sets, because not everyone sees that its worthwhile spending that sort of money, however when I first bought mine my wife screamed HOW MUCH !!! .... now she has her own QC3's and loves them. [;)]

I bought QC3s for my last vegas flight at the airport, what do they hand out for the first time ever on board, noise cancelling headphones. they were ok actually and I had to use them because I didn't realise my new qc3's needed charging up first.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but are they still noise cancelling headphones in UC? Flying MAN-MCO in a few weeks and thinking of leaving the ones I have home and buying QC3's out there.

They are kind of noise canceling, but nothing close to the levels of the QC line.

i didn't return my noise cancelling from my last UC flight (at that price for a flight thye should be free!!!) but I found they didn't work on normal equipment or other planes when trying a pair out a few months later - is this deliberate or a fault?

I believe that is deliberate. The ones supplied, usually have 2 pins. One supplies the sound feed as normal and the other provides power to the noise cancelling.

Don't try that if you fly international AA First (their Business Class may be the same): they supply VERY nice headphones (http://www.bose.co.uk/GB/en/home-entert ... /index.jsp) that cost £275 to buy. They are VERY careful to ensure that they are returned at the end of the flight... [;)].

Very good marketing from BOSE though - we went out and bought a couple of pairs after that flight and have seen quite a few other travellers with them...

i tried them in another 2 pin airplane, no joy and i tried them with a 2 pin adaptor in a variety of devices and no joy

Those Upper Class headphones wont work anywhere else (even in other VS cabins)

You need one of those 2 pin adapters for those other airlines that still insist on using 2 pin sockets in all their seats.

Luckly, you do get such an adapter with your QC2's and I guess QC3's though.
