In September I have my reward ticket booked for SFO. This leaves me with not enough miles for a CDC. Seeing as Tristar only want about 125 each way (cheaper than hotel/parking) I plan on making a private booking.
If I do, will I be able to get access to the drive-thru area as the driver will know the process and staff?

Technically, they are not allowed to do this.
In practice, they often do.
I know that's a bit 'wooly' , but in this case (as a question which pops up frequently) I'm afraid the answer is 'they might do, but don't bank on it'. Sorry.

How many miles do you have left? You could buy the difference in miles from VS then be certain that you can use DTCI. Purely buying the required miles the cost is 201GBP. Of course would be less if you have any miles in your account.
Some in the past have called VS and asked for an advance on miles for non-refundable tickets purchased for future travel. This way you could apply the 201GBP/125GBP to a future ticket but lose the miles and gain the CDC. Call before acting tho....

Thanks Paul. I'll see on the day. No great shakes if I can't but has to be worth a try either way.
Ben - only 500 miles I'm afraid so purchasing isn't cost-effective. Splurged my miles on the flight.
