Hi all

Following two trips to Florida, my fiancee and I racked up some Vigin Flying Club miles. We will be looking to fly again in the future, but our miles expire in May 09 if we don't fly before then, which will be unlikely.

If I take out the Virgin Atlantic Credit Card (white or black) do the points still expire? I am looking for a way to keep (and add to) them without having to fly.

Also, is it possible for my fiancee to transfer her miles to my account? The reason I ask is beacuse, say for example I wanted to use miles to upgrade 2 economy seats to 2 premium economy seats, and I wanted to pay for all this myself in a single transaction, I would not be able to use the points my fiancee has earned unless they were transferred to my account - is this correct?

If you have a read through the site, using the search facility, all of your questions are answered in great detail many times.

In essence, miles are valid for three years after the 'last activity'. This can be a flight, a hotel stay, a monthly transfer from your credit card or, if you book a reward flight, three years after the reward flight.

You can't transfer points from your fiancŽes account, but when you book a trip, you can book one leg from her account and one from yours so, in effect when both of you travel, the points are split 75%-25%.

You don't say how many miles you both have but, again, if you look through the site, you will find lots of ways of maximising the value of your points - be it for upgrades, or reward seats.

You also don't say which route you will be looking to use the points on, again there is great variation on reward availability, and tactics for trying to get the routes you want. For example, there are only 14 Upper Seats on the very popular Orlando planes, so availability there is minimal.

There are different ways you can keep your miles alive without flying or taking out the credit card. One is by buying Virgin wines or using one of the many Virgin parnters. Scrooge's favourite is car rental!

Your fiancee cannot transfer her miles to your account. She can however give permission for you to use her miles to upgrade but she would have to be on hand when you telephone Flying Club to verify this and also to verify her identity so that it can be done in the one transaction

I second the Car Rental, a 1 day rental in Las Vegas netted a surprisingly high 1000 miles.

Rather than introduce a new thread I thought I'd post my questions against an answer kindly provided by Honeylamb earlier in the year... this scenario relates to next May when Steve & I fly out UC to SFO for Bay To Breakers and our friend Dan will also be on same flight booked in Ec:

Question 1: If I interpret HL correctly, can I use my miles either before travel (with me present on the phone) or at LHR (with me in person) to upgrade Dan? Clearly I appreciate that there would need to be availability in PE or UC for this to be entertained. Having said all that I appreciate that, as he is on an N class fare, there is next to no chance of an upgrade as N's are non-upgradeable....unless we get lucky 'on the day'? I was thinking of perhaps asking in the Clubhouse as opposed to at check-in...what do others reckon?

Question 2: Clearly we can invite him as a guest into the CH but will Dan be allowed to share our CDC from home to LHR and pass through drive thru check-in with us?

Having tried to upgrade a N class with miles, you first have to pay some cash to get it into a ticket class where mieles can be used. It is often not worthwhile doing in my opinion.

I have never (nor my colleagues) been able to upgrade an N class ticket.

Not sure on Question 2, I would n't have thought it would be an issue, but I would call ahead to verify.
