I applied for Silver through the Amex promo (having previously dumped my flights to BD). Having flown a month ago, I've just received a letter telling me my Silver kit is 'on the way', but might take a little time as they are creating a new and improved pack. I quote

' ..your brand new card it on its way...which will have you in the silver saddle in no time'

along with several other horse references.

Leaving aside my pathlogical dislike of horses, I wonder what exciting delights the new pack will contain?

ISTR they are changing the HEX and GEX vouchers to a credit card type of voucher, to cut down on paper. Which also means you probably won't be able to give them to anyone else too easily.

The HEX and GEX vouchers are on a little bit of card that gets stamped at the ticket office. Not sure what they were before?

Otherwise it is a rather cunningly constructed cardboard confection, with one baggage tag and some printed guff. All very nice, but beaten by an unexpected Golden pack that arrived today....

The vouchers were separate before - so you could theoretically dole them out to friends and family. Now, either you carry it, or someone else - which means if you travel and use it, and a F&F travels the next day, they can't avail themselves of the upgrade.

Except you should now have a two-upgrade coupon from the silver pack, and a five upgrade one from the gold, so ... [y]

You're not, BTW, the first person I know to receive an unexpected 'Gold invite'. Any mktg group worth their salt would know from the quick two UC trips what kind of business you would bring, and I have to agree with the comment that, in these times, you have to know which customers to retain.

In the end Gold will get you 25% more miles over silver, but no added benefits since you are likely to always fly UC anyway. So it's a relatively small price to pay to show a good customer some recognition. Sounds like somebody just doing their job to me ...
