Taking bottles of wine onboard

Question for those in the know, can I take a couple of bottles of wine into the cabin with me?
My initial thought is yes, because, in theory, wine bought in duty free would go with you onto the plane. However having had unopened cans of drink and bottles of water taken off me at the gate, I'm not so sure.
I need to take the wine with me since they are props in a stage show, and a specific 1960s brand. Otherwise I'm going to have to take some sticky labels with me and get creative at the other end...

Pete,
I don't think there's any way they'll let you take them through security, unless the xray operator gets slack.
The stuff that you buy in duty free has been through some kind of special security screening (allegedly) where they can show it's not been tampered with.
Can you put them (well packed) in checked baggage?
It's a real shame. Nowadays I'm left with only the duty free choice of wine to get the FAs to open for me, and not even Berry Bros is open any more at T3.

We needed to take a very expensive 1952 armagnac to Oz recently. I was told it was impossible to take it as hand luggage so with huge misgivings I covered it in bubble wrap and placed it in the middle of my suitcase. When I checked it in I had fragile stickers put all over and to my utter amazement it arrived in one piece!
Good luck - just being curious but what drink is it?

Pete,
Yes you will be able to take in in the cabin with you if it is bought in DF shop even if there is a further gate check. I presume you are flying from a LON airport?
Make sure they put the bottles in the tamper proof bag with the receipt showing though.
Most problems arise when you have a connecting flight coming back to the EU from a country outside the zone.
Hope this helps
Iain

If it's bought in duty free and you're flying point to point then it should be fine surely, as Howard said, isn't the stuff bonded (or whatever they do) that they sell there?
Bringing it from landside would be a complete no no even if it was a vintage d'Yquem form whatever year it was best.
My Mum and brother were very annoyed when they had both their sun lotions consficated on the way to ALC [:D]

Bringing it from DF, absolutely fine (done it a few times in SF) [y]
I have ALSO shipped wine in the hold on my flight, in a proper cardboard/poly wine carrier box on almost every trip in the past year. Not one bottle has ever broken [y]

So what was that Blue Peter effort on packaging when I collected your luggage? [:p]

THAT was the worst wine carrier I've EVER seen provided by a winery!
I was THAT worried about the little gems, I had to use my boxers to wrap around and cushion the wine inside the carrier itself!

Take a trip to Cotswold Outdoors and buy a roll-top waterproof bag. At least if it does break you won't find your clothers covered in vintage claret. Worked for me taking a case of Boddingtons to BOS.

Pack it and check your luggage, Pete. Otherwise, no deal.
