Please tell me this is a joke, or down to a defective oven on an aircraft? If this is true, it is taking cost-cutting to the extreme - and I would imagine that it applies to PE also, as a PE meal is served on china plates as well. How much does it cost to have a couple of ovens on, on a low setting to take the 'meal cart chill' off plates?

It says a lot about the state of the airline if the only class you can get a hot 'plate' in is Y - and that is only because your meal was heated up in the 'plate'. The less said about VS's Y food offering the better too.

James not too sure if you are aware but PE meals are loaded cold and heated in an oven in the china. So hot plates it not an issue in PE. Also Y dont get hot plates but a hot meal in a plastic tub!!!

The reason the J hot plates have been taken off on MAN 'only' is for a trial. The reason is that VS have found that the catering companys have been burning and ruining the plates. They have also found that a hot meal served on a hot plate does not keep the meal hotter any longer that a meal served on a plate that is room temp. So it not just 'cost cutting' more stopping the plates getting damaged as they are not heated onboard but by the catering company. I really wish ppl knew the facts before posting.

I knew that Y meals were served & heated in a plastic tub - hence why I used the term 'plate' [in quotation marks] when referring to Y meals.

I did not know that the PE meals were loaded & heated on the plates - I wrongly assumed that like UC, the meals were heated then put onto a plate. Apologies for guessing wrong here.

But by not heating the plates they are not getting as many plates damaged which in turn means that less plates need to replaced, which of course you guessed it....saves money. Maybe I should be an auditor rather than a lawyer.[:w]

And I wonder how much extra the catering company charges for heating the plates.

It's a new service which VS are offering exclusively to UC passengers - they provide a warmed plate, you provide the food (assuming there's a McDonalds or Burger King in the terminal). Please note: this service is intended to extend and enhance passenger choice and is not - repeat not - a cost-cutting exercise.

Regardless of the actual temperature, there is a psychological issue in that cold plates will have passengers feeling that the food is getting cold.

Are we really getting all steamed up because of how hot our plates are, should we ask the crew to spoon feed us as well.[:D]

I am more interested on the crap and 'leaves' that they are putting on the plates than the plates themselves.

Was it previous cost-cutting that got plates that burn?
Or perhaps the contract or selection of catering company that does not force them to replace the plates they re-fire?

There are a couple off members of the crew that I would have no problems allowing them to spoon fed me.

Licking the plate clean on VS...you are joking right [?]

Well to the topic at hand, I have no issues with the plate being heated or not, as long as it's not freezing cold I don't care.
