Just read this on ITV teletext.

Could this spell the end of the FF programme for the majority?

Nigel.

Not necessarily. A few airlines have already sold off their FFP's.

Air Canada for example, a) sold off Aeroplan to become a new company in its own right and b) made a fortune in the 'sale'. Aeroplan now appears to be a very profitable enterprise indeed...

I remember a colleague of mine telling me years ago that in Oz his FF miles were a taxable commodity. As soon as you do that, the secondary taxation bandwagon hits town. And the accountants win every time. Damn. Should've been an accountant.

I do wonder about that as I earn a good few miles / hotel points / clubcard points on my business spend which are effectively tax free. Not that I'm complaining, you understand.

I presume they'd have to either (a) tar all loyalty schemes with the same tax brush or (b) have to ask for a split into business / private spend. Neither of these would be popular (mmm..that's not stopped them yet...) and both would be expensive to manage.
