I don't know if this has been posted before but it seems that in Jan and Feb there is not a huge demand for Tokyo so they are cutting a lot of flights:
Please be advised that Virgin Atlantic will cancel VS900/901
Heathrow-Narita services
on the following dates exUK:
Monday 19th January 2009
Wednesday 21st January 2009
Monday 26th January 2009
Wednesday 28th January 2009
Tuesday 3rd February 2009
Thursday 5th February 2009
Thursday 12th February 2009
Tuesday 17th February 2009
Thursday 19th February 2009
Tuesday 24th February 2009
Not great for Pax!

There are also cancellations for NBO, LAX, PVG, HKG and ORD from Nov through to Feb. All part of keeping the airline profitable by cutting flights with very light loads.

I was wondering why there were no flights available on Wednesdays and some other days when I was booking my flight in the fare sale. It also explains why there is a fare sale to these destinations instead of the more traditional USA flights.

Except Christmas day, and few days in January around Chinese New Year (all as usual practice each year), I don't see any cancellation on PVG route at all.
For HKG route, we will have increase flights from Oct, and double capacity from December. There is no sign of cutting on this profitable route.
virginboy747, where are your source from? I can see why NRT been seasonal on load, can't find any reason for cut back on HKG/PVG, especially considering cargo load together.

Just in case vb747 isn't back on the site any time soon, my money is on his source(s) being spot on. Horse's mouth, and all that.[;)]

Thanks virginboy, sadly that's VS off my list for Chicago travel, with this level of cancellations it means VS is likely to miss some frequent business of ours on that route. I question the wisdom of VS starting it again when say something like LHR-LAS might fill up a plane.

Thank you very much virginboy747.
As expected, HKG/PVG only cancelled for Chinese New Year period. I was a bit worried, because already booked 4 return flights on these routes in the coming months (until April), and at least 2 more (maybe 5) to come, really don't want to see any reduction on these routes.
Many thanks.
