Extra tax for S to G upgrade

PostPosted: 07 Oct 2008, 16:43

I have today, as many times before, upgraded my S class premium economy booking to upper class.

However for the first time I have been asked to pay 12 for YQ taxes.

Anyone know what this is?

Thanks

Yes taxes are the same however UC attracts higher fuel surcharges

I've never had to pay the extra tax US to UK, as I do not think the US Govt taxes the cabins differently. However, I have had to pay when I upgraded from Y to W a few years back.
I did n't have to pay when I got an Op Up :-)

YQ is specifically the fuel surcharge element of any ticket. As mentioned above, that is the part that can change with time and/or cabin booked.

Isn't it fun when people know what they're talking about!

Government fuel charge! I suspect that was a bit of spin. Very good discussion of the whole thing here - almost Mannionesque.

We are looking to do the same - can I ask, did they charge you the £50 admin fee for changing?

The OP upgraded from an 'S' fare and you dont pay a change fee to upgrade fares with miles.

You would only pay the change fee if you initial fare was not suitable for upgrading with miles ie if it where a PE K fare.

AU's do have to pay fare change fees in all cases.

We already have an S ticket - but are not Gold - so I'm right in thinking we'll just be charged the extra fuel charge?

Yes that's correct Gilly.

In a nutshell, if you are not flying in the lowest class of travel on a flight departing from the UK, you have to pay the higher rate of APD (Air Passenger Duty) which is £80. So fly out in PE or Upper on your UK outbound sector, you have to pay £80. If you fly out in Economy, and back into the UK in PE or Upper then it's £40.

YQ is the fuel surcharge and it varies by route, and by class. So if you upgrade from PE to Upper, you would need to pay the difference in YQ from PE to UC.

Thanks,
Richard

...and only recently did the fuel surcharge vary by cabin flown. It used to be flat across the aircraft.

I queried it when I recently upgraded, too. It's going to make airport upgrades more of a nightmare now, as they will require a visit to ticketing. I wonder if you will still be able to process airport upgrades in the Clubhouses, or you'll have to do them while landside and visit the ticket desk?
