Advice - PC in hold baggage

I have been asked to carry a PC over to New York next week for a collegue and since I already will be carrying one into the cabin I intend to pack this in my hold luggage - well packed of course.

Is this acceptable behaviour?

Thanks

Nothing to stop you. Personally I wouldn't though.

If it's a work one, see if you can take the HDD out and carry it in hand baggage. At least that way if lost, the data isn't. if a personal one, wrap really well and be aware insurance may not cover it in the hold.

Funnily enough the one thing that is not important is the HD as it's going to be replaced by the HD from my collegues erroneous PC that he already has.

Meh disks autopark these days. I brought a server back from the US in a suitcase a couple of years back without any issues. They're pretty much solid state these days...

I frequently travel with IT kit in the hold.... usually very well packed in specialist cases and Ive never had a breakage (always take laptops though)... I know your hard drive is being replaced but its always worth bearing in mind what data may have been on there in the past and would you want this in someone elses hands even if you dont need it now.

My drives are always bitlockered or encrypted in some other way if ever they leave the doors of my office let alone going into the hold of an aircraft ....

Hope that helps

Thanks for all the advice - I'll take the HD out.

My main issue was I guess one of security and whether there would be any objections to checking it in. I guess not.

Thanks

The scanners for checked baggage are pretty powerful so it shouldn't cause any problems.

There is no problem as has been said BUT don't forget your TSA approved locks if flying to the USA as they will want to have a look!

Arrived safe and sound. Had to think carefully about the customs form though - it was being left in the US - but I was bringing a different one back and it was for a collegue who was also UK based normally.
