Just for a little fun, can anyone name all the airlines associated with SRB and if he has a controlling interest in them ?

Virgin Atlantic 51%
Virgin America ?
V Australia ?
Virgin Blue ?
Virgin Nigeria ?

any more ?

and to make it even more difficult - what planes do they fly.

Have fun [:D]

AirAsia X is also affiliated with Virgin Group, as they hold a 16% stake in the airline.

The Virgin name can only be used by Virgin blue and it cannot be used outside of Australia due to a written agreement between Virgin atlantic and virgin blue, it is also part of Virgin blue group not just the Virgin group.

The other airlines i.e pacific blue and V Australia are part of the virgin blue group so they are not allowed to use the Virgin name.

So who controls the Virgin Blue Group - is it Virgin or is the name just licensed and someone else controls the VB Group

The name is licensed, originally to a firm called partick.
I know that it has changed hands at least once.
A firm called Toll holdings bought patrick so it held a majority stake but sold it earlier this year so im not quite sure who it is licensed to, but the CEO is Bret Godfrey.

Im not an expert on Virgin blue im just reading Wiki.[:D]

Are you discounting V Galactic because it claims to be a Spaceline?
At least it does have an aircraft - White Knight Two!

wow - thanks Scrooge

Virgin Blue have got some fleet - 64 planes in just a few years, and didn't realise that VA had as many airbus.

130+ planes painted in 'virgin' colours - not a bad little collection

thanks again

Apparently Virgin Blue can't use the virgin name in some circumstances because it would upset SQ

Actually the written agreement is between Virgin Atlantic and Singapore Airlines I think

The other airlines i.e pacific blue and V Australia are part of the virgin blue group so they are not allowed to use the Virgin name.

Virgin America only has this weird arrangement of 25% Virgin Group, 75% VAI partners because the US government is protectionist and allows foreign entities to only own 25% of a US airline. When Virgin America started up, there was a long palaver about the CEO, who had to step down after Virgin America started flying, because he was, according to the DoT (and the incumbent airlines), 'under the influence of Virgin Group' (and they argued that it would give Virgin Group more than 25% of influence on Virgin America). Which was complete bollocks, but hey, whatcha gonna do. Other conditions were the dropping of the requirement to have the Virgin logo on the tail (so Virgin America can drop it if they want to, but they won't), and the loss of a board seat.

V Australia is called such so as to not clash with any trademarks and license agreements, since, as someone else pointed out, SQ has the rights to the Virgin name on international routes (through VS). V Oz would be flying from Oz to the US and in the future to South Africa and other Asian destinations, competing with the VA trademark.

Pacific Blue is called such because of the same agreement. SQ vetoed the use of the Virgin name by the airline (started up by Virgin Blue), since it does serve multiple Pacific destinations and is as such an international airline. Virgin Blue is primarily domestic and does not clash with SQ license agreements.

If SQ sells its stake in VS, do you think V Australia and Pacific Blue will be rebranded 'Virgin'?

What are the potential Oz branding changes if the SQ's stake is sold?
