TP and Upgrading

Apologies if this has been asked before but the search function isn't working this morning.

A friend of mine said that he recently used miles to upgrade a paid ticket from PE to UC. In the past, I was pretty sure you continued to receive the TP for the original paid class. However, he said this time he received no TP. According to him, FC told him that now when you use miles to upgrade a paid booking, you no longer get TP. Is this true? I would be quite upset since upgrading is the primary use I have for miles (since I barely make Gold every year)

Never heard of this before, you will still earn the original miles and TP's for the class you paid to travel in. The only thing you will have to do is once you have taken your flight, you will have to call FC to get your miles and TP's added manually as for some reason their system doesn't do it automatically when you have upgraded using miles.

The only time you don't earn miles/TP's is when it is either a full miles booking or a MPM fare.

Flying Club was wrong on this occasion - tell him to call again and request the miles and TPs for the PE journey, speaking to someone there who knows will likely get the right result.

Sometimes miles and TPs do not post automatically if there is an upgrade on the ticket.

As mcmbenjamin says, often when you upgrade a ticket with miles the tier points do not automatically get credited as the fare in the system now looks like a reward rather than a revenue fare. I suspect this is why your friend did not recieve tier points when he indeed should. Get him to call back and request that the tier points be added, or make a miles claim through the VS website. This is one recerring issue that really can be a pain [:(]

I find a phone call usualy gets the fastest results. I never got TPs awarded automatically on the occassions I upgraded using miles to UC from PE.
