Why or why has the carpet after immigration has been threadbare in terminal 3?

This really give the most shocking first impression when you arrive in the UK and it has been this way as long as I can remember.

I know this is a rather pointless rant but I wondered if anyone else finds this quite as embarrassing as me.

Totally agree - Terminal 3 beyond Virgin's area is awful.
Also noticed that Gatwick arrivals is similarly depressing.

Yes, but when you consider that Virgin's area is just a check in zone and a lounge, everyone still has to use the same disgusting security, airside environment, gates, immigration and baggage hall as a passenger on PIA.

When you consider this it's quite hard to understand just why Virgin are branding T3 as a flying utopia in the marketing hype.

Unless Branson really gets his dream, the VS branding and marketing has to end somewhere. The only other thing VS could do to show off their brand is a trailing ad when entering the arrivals hall like this.

First few steps: 'This way to the to Upper Class Arrival Lounge REVIVALS'
Few More Steps: 'Showers'
Few More Steps: 'Breakfast'
Few More Steps: 'Only available for ALL Upper Class passengers'
Few More Steps: 'www.VS.com/upperclass'
Few More Steps: 'Did we mention the limo?'
Few More Steps: 'www.VS.com/upperclass'
Then a thick red line with VS logos (and between messages) leading to the Revivals.

Could work. And would poke fun at UA and other carriers that do not allow upgrades in their arrivals lounges.
