Just had a mess around with the earning calculator on VS website and noticed that I will only earn 50% of the miles flown in economy since I am on a 'N' fare to/from HKG. I know this previously only applied to flights to the US and generally flights to the Far East earn 100% miles irrespective of fare type. I still remember, must have been just over 2 years ago, that on an X fare I earned 11,940 miles on a return flight to HKG. I just didn't realised VS changed the rules.

Yep N fares now only earn 50% of miles, although on the other hand they now earn 2TP's instead of only 1, like they previously did. Various fares buckets changed the mileage earned from 1st December IIRC (amongst others a Z fare now only earns 150% of miles flown instead of 200% previously).

This sucks. I would rather have the miles than TP.

Makes two of us, it also doesn't help that VS put these rules in place, then don't allow us to select a fare type on the website [:#]

The miles earning potential is not so great any more. Might just have to re-evaluate my future travel plans.

The problem with that is a lot of airlines are going down the same path.

I am thinking just fly whoever offer the cheapest fare rather than paying a premium (sometimes) just to fly VS for the miles. I am still staying with VS until I have reached 100k miles for my UC reward. Thought I will be almost there after this trip but not anymore. I am slowly getting there though but now even slower.

Well, the discounted flight with 2 TPs is pretty generous. For a long time, I've flown BA without earning anything to Silver, and around 25% of the regular mileage reward.

At least you can see what the Class Fare is on the website, and if you want a different type, you can always call.

I don't think I've ever earned a tier point with BA. Given the credit crunch, I'm now flying less, and the extra tier points are most welcome!

Agreed, however for the less frequent fliers like myself the extra TP's mean nothing, it's all about the miles, being silver means nothing, except the mileage bonus.

Saying that I can kind of understand the move in going half miles on the N, but reducing the Z, that is not a good move.
