Pretty sure this is a no but thought I'd double check, if use my AMEX upgrade reward to PE from Y, there's then no way I can use money or miles to upgrade to Upper is there.. unless I pay stupid stupid money considering the sale fares?

You are correct, of course there is always a chance that on the day at the airport something might be possible, but certainly not in advance.

you can however use the voucher to upgrade one leg to PE and use miles to upgrade the other to UC. I have done this before for a PE out UC return.

Can you upgrade a leg from a bought Flexi (L) economy seat to PE using said voucher?

No, to use the voucher you must use miles to 'buy' the economy fare and then it will be upgraded to PE with the voucher(subject to there been rewards available in PE)

well dont flame me, but I have used the vouchers and then used miles to upgrade to upper many times in the past!

Are we talking about the Amex PE Upgrade Reward voucher?

If it's possible (and I had assumed the T&Cs said not), then perhaps it's because they are booking it into a mileage reward U class code, and that is upgradeable with more miles.

Spoke to flying club about this.. I've managed to use my PE reward for upcoming flights, there is the chance to upgrade to UC but it's the cost of upgrading from Economy not PE, so pointless using the voucher.

Have done soemthing similair, I spent the amount of Y miles needed then used the vouchers to upgrade to PE, then few weeks late i rang to change one of the legs to UC, which cost me the miles from Y to UC then came back in PE. (there was a miles sale on at the time so wasn't too bothered about loosing the PE voucher)

Same happened with me but each time I rang in to complain and hey presto they refunded the miles percentage for the upgrade from y to pe if that makes sense
