Oh Michael White is normally so much better than that.

It really gets on my wick when people in the media use their columns to bring up this sort of minor stuff rather than complain directly.

Yep. Having just experienced several meals on NZ, I'll second that. Also, they don't have a duty free cart on NZ, probably given the cart space over to better food! Also gives the crew one less thing to do, thus allowing them to concentrate on providing that great service!

Surprisingly, I thought the food ex-UK was the tastiest and best thought out, HKG second, AKL third, and LAX lagging at the back (breakfast excepted).

NZ's consulting chef ex-LAX is Govind Armstrong, who's continuing love affair with baby food-like purees drives me crazy... mostly with hunger. I have teeth for now, and I'd like to use them while I still can. [;)]

The service was damned good too. AKL-HKG comes top (fantastic crew member working our aisle), LHR-LAX and LAX-AKL (would have been 3rd, but for the really nice FSM) joint 2nd, HKG-LHR 4th (lukewarm coffee, 'inbound blues'), but all were good!

Trip reports to follow when $dayjob is less hectic.
