The companion ticket is usually redeemed when you purchase a more flexible and expensive ticket. You get a matching one, although you have to pay the taxes and surcharges on the second ticket.
Be very careful though, as you can often find that 2 discounted tickets can be cheaper than Buy 1 expensive one, and the tax on the 2nd ticket.
The Bookings team are well versed in the redemption rules, so I would suggest you contact them when you are pricing up flights.
Regards
Mark

As UK Cobra says, 'be careful' with the companion vouchers. In three years I've never found a case where it was cheaper than buying two 'cheap' tickets
Can anyone prove me wrong?

Yes. Frequently. Coach to JNB for example, or a PE S to various destinations. In UC never personally.

Yep, but only in PE.
The economy tickets are usually on cheap deals, the UC seats are rarely available as rewards and one full price fare is more than buying two sale tickets, but the companion vouchers can be a help for PE.
I've just booked two PE tickets for May, LGW-MCO for £1131 inc all taxes etc so a useful £560 saving by using a voucher.

Yesterday for the first time in 3 years i manged to use my MBNA companion voucher. LHR-IAD and return MIA-LHR in Sept 09
Got a S class fare in PE and with the taxes for the companion ticket it worked out nearly £300 cheaper than 2 of the lowest available tickets in PE.

I've also used companion tickets on several PE flights, where I find they reap the most reward. I have also let several expire. So, while admittedly the companion vouchers are not always giving you the free flight the marketing hype delivers, many of us on V-Flyer have managed to grab a saving now and then with them.
Thanks,
Sarah
