Am sure this has been discussed before but my searching is coming up with nothing, but has anyone had any experience of reward miles tickets being opened up for flights that are currently saying there are no reward tickets left?

Depends on loads. If Au Revenue will generally open one up on request a week before if there is availability.

In my experience as a non-Au, in the past I have simply persisted in checking for changes after booking an upgradeable fare bucket ticket. It becomes a little tedious but it has paid off for me. Having said that, one rule of thumb I noticed is that reward availabilty rarely pops up for known-busy flights and these are most often Fridays and weekends. If you're flying mid-week then you might be more likely to score. It can sometimes be within the last month or even last fortnight before my flights before I've managed to nab a reward class. In some cases I've had to take advantage of the extra flexibility an upgradeable fare bucket ticket had and move dates to get the reward. You may however be seeking a full reward rather than an upgrade. As the classes are the same for rewards and reward upgrades I'm sure the same advice should stand. Keep checking. Ignore the 'sorry nothing available' message and mess about with the dates until you finally get the system to show you the calendars. You can then see the entire month's reward availability. Something that VS doesn't publically publish for expertflyer or KVS Availability Tool (my personal favourite) to see [to my knowledge anyway].

Thanks Andrew, yeh am after a full reward ticket rather than upgrade, either side of the day I want to fly out is available but not the day I need to go. Typical!
