LHR to EWR aircraft type in Sept 09

I've just looked up fares etc for an intended trip to NY - EWR in Sept.
I've done this journey several times recently and have always found good priced UC deals - and the planes have always been Airbus 340.
However for the Sept dates the aircraft is listed as a 747 400 series - this means there are PE seats on the upper deck -which to me are fine - much better placed than on the Airbus.
So I am tempted to book PE and save a lot of .
The question is - can I trust Virgin not too switch to the Airbus at the last moment.
Any views?

The LHR 747's do not have the PE seat upstairs anymore, this changed last year. It is now all UC upstairs, and the PE section is now to the right on the L2 door as you board. It is a 2-4-2 config with the new purple leather seats.

So I guess it won't really matter if VS do an a/c, something that to be honest, is quite common on this route.

Edit: There is a photo of the new PE cabin on the LHR 747's towards the bottom of this thread.

Hi Neil
In that case the 'which aircraft' link on this site is incorrect as it shows the LHR 747 400 series with the PE seats still on the upper deck?
If you are correct then this should be corrected.
Many thanks for the warning

The Seat Maps Section still has an old style LHR 747-400 shown in addition to the new style, but if you pick the 'Which Aircraft?->LHR-EWR VS-001' it takes you to the correct 'Boeing 747 Config 3 (LHR)'

Just to throw in a clanger last month i travelled on a 330, so in reflection i would say you have a 1 in 3 chance of getting what you want.[}:)]

Just to clarify, it is actually config 4 (LHR) in the seat maps page here. Config 3 is a LGW config.

Config 1, was the old LHR config but this is no longer fitted on any a/c.

we dont fly A330s.

In september the VS 1 is scheduled as a LHR 744 up until 12th, then from 13th onwards its on an A346.
The VS 17 is on an A346 permanently.

This of course can be subject to change.
