VIRGIN ATLANTIC OPERATES RELIEF FLIGHTS TO GRENADA

Following the devastation of Hurricane Ivan in the Caribbean, Virgin Atlantic will today start a three-day operation to bring aid to the island of Grenada. The airline will be carrying more than 56 tonnes of aid. These shipments will include temporary housing and emergency domestic equipment for over 1,000 people, as well as essential water purification equipment capable of producing over 800,000 litres of clean water. In addition the airline will be carrying 50,000 bottles of drinking water, clothing, bedding and other household supplies essential to the well being of the Island's many displaced families.

Sir Richard Branson, chairman of Virgin Atlantic, commented:

"Since the destruction of Hurricane Ivan to the beautiful island of Grenada, we have been liaising with the Government and key contacts in Grenada to determine what sort of aid is needed. Virgin Atlantic is pleased to be able to bring over 56 tonnes of much needed relief, including desperately needed drinking water, out to Grenada over the next three days to help with the reconstruction process.

"We have had a fantastic response from a variety of organizations such as Tesco PLC, Watermark PLC, Shelter Box UK, Aqua Box UK and the Rotary Club who have generously offered essential water, food and supplies to help the families rebuild their homes and their lives."

The aid will be carried in the cargo hold of Virgin Atlantic Barbados flights departing Gatwick on Wednesday 22, Thursday 23 and Friday 24 September. The Wednesday flight will land in Barbados and once passenger luggage has been unloaded, additional supplies from Barbados will be loaded onto the aircraft. The aircraft will then transport the aid to Grenada. On Thursday and Friday further aid will be unloaded in Barbados and transported to Grenada by ferry and domestic airline.
