Hi

My husband is adament that on the back page of the latest IFLY that it said miles could be used to reduce the cost of flights.

I was always under the impression that you could do this but had to have enough miles to cover the entire trip not part. I sadly in a fit of domestication threw the magazine out so can't check it, any thoughts, who is right!!

I hope you haven't put any money on this, 'cos your husband's right. MilesPlusMoney fares are available - see this link for details :)

Cheers

Michael

There are a number of ways you could effectively use miles to reduce the cost of a flight (rather than 'pay' for the whole flight in miles):

1. Miles plus Money fares, where you use a small number of miles (2000 for EC) and get a reduced fare. You don't earn miles or TP on an MPM fare and it's not the most cost effective use of miles, but it can be useful if you have few miles and aren't likely to earn many more, or where cutting costs is you paramount concern.

2. You can use miles to upgrade e.g. pay for an EC ticket and upgrade with miles to PE. You can't upgrade all types of tickets and it may work out better value to buy a discouted ticket inthe higher class.

3. Pay for one sector of your tip with cash and the other with miles e.g. buy a one-way outbound ticket with cash and a one-way return with miles. One way tickets seem to be more expensive than discounted returns though, so this might not be that cost effective.

Hope this helps, others may have more/better suggestions.

I like the last sentance of that add on the back page that says:

'Failing that you could always marry the pilot' :D :D
