And very nice the SFO clubhouse is. Champagne in hand and burger on order.

Just finished 15 nights driving Northern California and Oregon. We have seen some amazing sights during 2,700 miles of travel. With hindsight probably did a 3 week trip in 2 weeks, but only so much leave available.

Flew into SFO on 15th July, and drove up to Benecia for 1st night. Not the best start as immigration was 45 mins and then the car was not what I expected, so took a while to sort that out, and finally the journey which should have been 70 mins took 140 mins, so checking in to BnB at 7pm. The issue with the car was that I had booked a SUV, but hadn't realised that we wouldn't have a boot or even a parcel shelf to hide our luggage on those transfer days when sightseeing. Surprise, surprise, all they could offer me was a full size at 15 dollars a day extra. So already over spending!

Nice night in Benecia then drove up tp the Lassen Volcanic park area for 2 nights, so a day in the park. Beautiful place, walked down to Bumpass Hell (yes it is called that), to see the sulphur venting and mud boiling.

Then to Yreka for a night, and the to La Pine, via Crater Lake, which is beautiful, but we really needed more time, hey-ho.

Long drive to Halfway, stopping at the John Day Fossil Beds. More beauty in what is a high desert. Rocks of all colours. Quite comical at Halfway as we arrived at 17:55 (the time not the year although it was hard to tell), and got the impression that the manager of the inn may have gone home at 18:00. Then he said if we wished to eat the only place in town stopped serving at 7, so better hurry up.

Then we went to Joseph. This looked familiar as very alpine was the scenery. Made the 'mistake' of going to a rodeo there. Unfortunately the 3rd bucking bronco broke a leg, so not nice to look at. Took 15 mins to calm the horse down and get it into a trailer. We left early in the end. To be fair I enjoy a day at the races, so would be hypocritical to get too critical about it.

Then down to Hood River, some good food there. Spent a day driving round Mt. Hood itself.

Then a change of scene as over to the coast, starting in Depoe Bay, then to Brooking, Eureka, and Mendocino. Some breathtaking views during the drive. Mendocino was a nice way to end, very pretty, and had our last full day 'off', just walked around.

Indeed there are. That part of the world is very familiar to me as I have a very dear friend who used to live in Garberville and then moved to Fortuna just south of Eureka. I have visited the area five or six times and have toured that area extensively, staying a couple of times in the quirky Benbow Inn (just missing King Abdullah of Jordan by one day - his loss!) and also in the quaint Little River Inn just south of Mendocino.

Glad to hear that the SFO CH is living up to expectations! Mrs P and I did a 2.5 week trip from SF, into Lassen Volcanic Park, up to the Redwoods, back into Crater Lake and then up the Oregon and Washington coast finishing up flying back from YVR. That coastline is beautiful and stunning along with the Anacortes off the WA Coast, it took our breath away. Glad you had a great trip! Safe and enjoyable flight home
