Managed to get 2 upper class returns for £1800, one z class and one g class in June 2016. Quite happy with the amount paid. Not so happy about the type of plane. Have booked 9A & 10A, are these good seats or not as cannot seem to find many reviews. Also has anyone flown or taken the train from new york to boston, looking at amtrak but saus you cannot take large suitcases on the train.

Nothing wrong with the A340-600s at all. All young aircraft delivered between 2004-2007, the UC cabins are being re-upholstered to keep them fresh and they've all got on demand entertainment.

9&10A are good seats.

They don't tend to operate to BOS any more. They launched on that route as it was suitable to bed them in on, but they're better suited to the longer routes on which they mostly now operate.

As for travelling between New York & Boston you can take two large suitcases on the train (23kg each - remember US dimensions are given in inches not cm). The Northeast Regional trains that ply that route are old and slow but very comfortable and spacious by British standards with excellent leg room. There's also the premium Acela Express which costs quite a bit more but goes a bit faster.

My preference would be for the train over flying but go with whichever fits your schedule and budget the best.

I took the NorthEast Regional from Washington to Philly (next stops was NY & then Boston) Same route, but in reverse.
Quite comfortably got my Dakine Split Roller 100 litre (you can google it to get an idea of the size) into the overhead storage...

Amtrak luggage guide :-
Each passenger may bring 2 personal items, 25 lbs. and 14 x 11 x 7 inches each, and 2 carry-on items, 50 lbs. and 28 x 22 x 14 inches each, onboard.

quick google of my Dakine isize: 32 x 17 x 13.5-Inch

They did not seem strick about enforcing luggage policy. Guess its not an issue as long as there is room.

The rest of my family abandoned me last year and used the northeast regional from DC to Philidelphia and then to NY and each took a large case with no issues.

Another vote for the train. A much more civilised way to travel and you get to see more of the country and there are some very nice views indeed.

Thanks for all the advice, in the end we booked flights from Newark due to the time and picking up rental car from the Boston airport. Have booked United 1st class, is was either £65 for economy plus an additional $25 for 1st bag and $ 2nd bag $35 or £96 with 2 bags 1st class so was a no brainer.
