A340 economy - best seats

Hi all hopefully someone can help as struggling to find any information through the search option.

We (me & girlfriend) are looking to go to New York in August. We did this trip two years ago on a 747 and loved the upstairs seating. Assuming they will be phased out by the time we travel as all flights are showing as an A340. As we have no experience of this plane we are wondering if anyone can advise on the economy seats (unfortunately all our budget allows.) We were lucky enough to get the rear row upstairs on 747 and although seatguru advised possible limited recline we found the recline was fine if anything had more recline than seats further forward. Can anyone advise if rows 43/44/46 have any limited recline? On a flight back from Mexico we booked exit row seats but found them to narrow to warrant the extra money I notice there are some extra legroom seats that aren't exit row are these worth the money?

Sorry for the questions and thanks in advance for any help.

Ignore Seatguru - it's wrong. All seats in all cabins on all VS aircraft have full recline.

The extra legroom seats have an additional 3" of legroom (pitch is 34" instead of 31") and unlike the exit rows - where the seats are narrower because the tray table & IFE screen are stored in the arm rest - you get the standard seat width. Most V-Flyers seem to rate them highly although the very tall will still find them tight.

The upstairs (bubble) part on the LHR 747 will be sadly missed by all classes whether UC, PE or Economy.

The Airbus 340 is actually my favourite aircraft. When we've travelled in economy as a 'pair/couple' the most important seats for us are in A C or H K which means the two seats down each side. I'd always pay the fee to get a side pair, rather than risking being in any of those middle four economy seats.

In the past we have also paid out for extra leg room or exits seats and on the three ocassions felt they have been very overpriced, mainly because I found people stood in front of us when leg-stretching, waiting for the loo or little kids came and played with their toys in the space (exit area of course). Like I said, I'd always prefer to pay a bit extra for the side two seats, in preference over the extra leg room ones. However it is worth adding, I'm only 5'2" ;-)

I usually book in the tail section of the plane, where it goes down to two seats.
A) It's more structurally secure back there, and you are statistically more likely to survive an accident
B) It tapers off, so you tend to have a bit more room on the side, since they can't fit another seat.

Just selected 62K for my flight tomorrow :-) Usually fly PE, but it was a last minute booking, and PE was over $4,000 roundtrip.

On the A340 if you can get them the first row of economy (exit row) these are at the over wing exit and so there is no slide attached to the door making leg room totally unlimited.

Thanks everyone for all your advice. Booked flights last night flying out on the VS9 back a week later on VS10. We haven't booked seats yet as wondering if any chance another dreamliner will be added to the route? We won't be leaving it to long as have an idea what seats we want. My girlfriends has a friend who is cabin crew and she has reccomended row 32 or the 2 extra leg room rows behind so if likely to be the A340 we will go with them.

Thanks again

According to seat guru both sides of row 32 have no window , not sure if this is correct or not but I've changed my seats for NYC next month to further back just in case ,can anyone confirm if this is the case ?

Certainly there isn't an easy to reach window on the K seat ass I had it o the way back from JNB, which is a night flight so didn't bother me in the slightest. The extra endless legroom more than made up for the non-window. I put my carry on case on the floor with my travel pillow on top and had a lovely footrest which enabled me to sleep!

It was the front row. Sorry for the confusion, I thought that was 32. I thought row 32 did have a window as I am sure sat in 31K I could twist back slightly and see out of a window.

No worries , I think I'll leave my seats as they are now just in case the 32 s don't have a window :-D
